Sarafa Bazaar
“The one thing in Indore you cannot skip. Go hungry, go after 10 PM, and pace yourself.”
By day, Sarafa is a jewellery market. Around 9 PM the shutters come down, the food carts roll in, and the same lane becomes the night food market every Indori will tell you about within five minutes of meeting you. It runs past 1 AM, it has been doing this for decades, and it is the single best answer to "what should I do in Indore?"
The system is the charm: gold merchants let food vendors set up outside their closed shops at night — the vendors get a market, the merchants get free overnight security. What you get is a 500-metre lane of chaat, kulfi, and things you will not find outside Malwa. Bhutte ka kis (grated corn cooked in ghee and milk) and garadu (fried yam with a sharp masala) are the two local specials to order first.
Prices are street-honest. We ate six things across two people and crossed ₹600 only because we kept going back for the malpua. Most items sit between ₹40 and ₹90. Carry cash — most stalls take UPI now, but the queue moves faster with notes.
Weekends after 11 PM are shoulder-to-shoulder. If you want photos and space to stand, come on a weeknight around 10. If you want the full carnival, come Saturday and surrender to it.
What we ate, what it cost
From our bill, 23 Aug 2026 · total ₹620
- Bhutte ka kis— Joshi's — the reason to come₹40
- Garadu (fried yam)— Winter special, masala is everything₹60
- Sabudana khichdi₹50
- Malpua with rabri₹90
- Jaleba (giant jalebi)— One is enough for three people₹80
- Shikanji (Indori style)— It's a dessert, not a drink₹120
Go smarter
- Start savoury (kis, garadu, khichdi), end sweet (malpua, jaleba, kulfi) — not the other way around.
- Split everything. Portions are bigger than they look and the point is variety.
- The famous stalls have queues; the stall next to a famous one is often 90% as good with no wait.
- Auto or two-wheeler beats a car. The lanes around Rajwada choke by 10:30 PM.
Quick answers
What time does Sarafa Bazaar open and close?
Food stalls set up from about 8:30 PM and the market runs until roughly 1:30 AM, every night of the week. The best window is 10 PM to midnight. (Checked on site, August 2026.)
What should I eat first at Sarafa Bazaar?
Bhutte ka kis and garadu — both are Indore specials you won't easily find elsewhere. Then sabudana khichdi, and finish with malpua-rabri or a jaleba.
Is Sarafa Bazaar vegetarian?
Yes — the entire market is vegetarian, and many stalls are Jain-friendly. Ask the vendor; they are used to the question.
